Regardless of the style of music you play, I’d recommend learning some country guitar. Chicken Pickin’ as it’s called is harder than it looks and the hybrid (pick & fingers) picking will be good for you. This gentleman is one of my favorite pickers.
Choosing the style of guitar that you want to play is the first step in becoming proficient. The style can be musical (rock, classical, blues, new age, etc.) or it can be technique based. There are some very creative approaches to playing the guitar out there, some are curious if not totally unorthodox. If you choose to deviate from traditional posture, how the guitar is held, left & right hand technique, you’ll probably only be able to play that way. Why? Because, playing the guitar in an innovative way takes 100% more time and it’s techniques require constant practice to perfect. It is very difficult to serve two masters, and most guitar players just don’t have the time.
Finding your own voice is important and one of the main reasons you play the guitar. Deciding on music that you like is easy. Understanding what you like and why requires some thinking and analysis. Have you ever tried to figure out why you like what you do? What chords do they play? Do you like the rhythm? Tempo? Guitar Sound? What exactly is drawing you to the music you’re listening to? Getting a professional guitar teacher can help as they can dissect the songs and answer the questions above for you.
Watch this amazing guitar player and his unorthodox technique. It really works for him. He’s a great player, however I wouldn’t want all my students to play like he does. This is a great example of flawless technique in an intriguing and entertaining style, and a glimpse as to what’s possible. The guitar is an incredible instrument, I’m thankful for it every day.
