I’m often asked two questions, ‘how long should I practice’, and ‘what should I study, what’s the priority’. Well, from the numerous students I meet with every week the number one area of neglect is note readying. I can’t say this any simpler, musicians read music. Tablature is wonderful and I teach TAB every day, however you’re stunting your musical growth by not learning how to read. Make a goal for this summer to break out your note reading materials and your method books and get your sight reading skills up to par.

I hope you didn’t jump into 2010 without having a ‘musical plan’. How can you improve your playing from last year? One easy way is to do an assessment of your skills. Here’s what my students received the 1st week of January.

Guitar Lesson Plan – With Eric Peterson

Please rate yourself on a scale of 1 (being the worst) and 10 being the best in the following categories.

Tone _____

Memorized Songs or Pieces _____

Own Compositions & ideas _____

Music Theory _____

Scale Memorization _____

Chords _____

Rhythm _____

Speed & Accuracy _____

Versatility, Styles of Music _____

10. Note & Sight Reading _____

If you’re not sure what any of the above mean, please ask to ensure the score is accurate.

Each student was asked to rate themselves and we would discuss areas they felt deficient.

Your pinkie finger is crucial to playing the guitar, but needs help. Here are some tips.

Pinkies for hire? Does your pinkie feel like an alien finger? Do you have problems using him due to poor strength or dexterity? Well, you’re not alone. Your pinkie is not very strong or very smart. He needs extra attention to play the guitar. Here are some tips. If you’re a pentatonic player, learn the 3-note per string major and minor scales; the pinkie plays all the third notes on each string. Practice the 24 groups of four i.e. 1234, 1243, 1324 1342, as the pinkie has to play fret four. While you’re watching TV, hammer-on and pull-off your pinkie in combination with your other fingers i.e. 14, 24, 34. There are hundreds of chords that utilize the pinkie, pick up a book by Ted Greene. You will soon notice big changes in your pinkie.

The cliché' 'Practice makes Perfect' is wrong. Here is what you should be saying.

Practice makes perfect has been preached for years and years, and it’s wrong.
I read a great replacement cliché’ the other day, ‘Practice Makes Permanent’. I totally agree. Beginning guitarists should ensure their posture, hand position, and tone are correct while practicing, or the time spent will be wasted. What use is an incorrect fingered, sloppy, “oh, that sounds fine” rendition of a piece no one can stand to listen to? How you approach your practice is how you do most things. Where can you make improvements this year? If you’re not taking private lessons, you should be. Anyone can download a TAB or buy a book. A professional teacher will advise you on the correct fingers (the ones the artist is using). They will help you to see the chords and progression. They will save you hours of time. Stop making bad habits permanent and call a professional, private guitar teacher.
