About Me & the Program

My name is Eric Peterson, I’ve been playing the guitar for 25 years. I began teaching at age 16 while a sophomore in High School. I teach all styles of music, and to all ages. I have 16 CDs and am finishing my 3rd instructional book entitled Guitar Antics. I own electric, acoustic, classical, 12-string, and bass guitars as well as a mandolin and ukulele. If you’re interested in hearing my music, you can find me on ITunes, Rhapsody, or anywhere else you download songs. Or, visit my Buy CD’s page, clicking on the CD will take your to my distributor.

MY PROGRAM
So what do I teach? My program can be broken down into Songs, Theory, and Technique. And, not necessarily in that order.

My teaching method comes from my first book entitled “Functional Guitar” where songs, music theory, and technique are combined in a personalized program for each student. I’m almost finished with my third instructional book entitled “Guitar Antics” which I hope to finish in 2010.

Teaching is best left to those who love it and do it for the right reasons as taking lessons from the ‘hot’ player down the street dooms you from the start. Becoming a good guitar player requires consistent lesson attendance and preparation by the teacher. Both of those are impossible if your lessons are cancelled due to a gig or unplanned show.
I’ve found many ‘guaranteed’ result approaches to the guitar, including exercises and theory applications and examples. Balancing the music theory with the requested songs or styles of music by the student is my speciality. I have one of the few kids guitar programs in the state where students age 5-10 can learn fun ‘current’ songs, rhythm studies and games, and be exposed to a variety of other instruments.
Lessons are taught once a week, and last 30 minutes. Kids attention spans are around 17 minutes, so having a longer lesson becomes a waste of time. Students will have anywhere from 4 to 5 lessons per month, depending on the number of weeks. You will have homework which may include memorization of scales, chords, arpeggios, and notation. You will need a 3-ring binder for your music and handouts; there are no hand written lessons. All music is computer generated and laser printed. I am very organized and offer a great guitar lesson value. I hop you are serious about becoming a proficient guitar player!

TIP - Learning to improvise (jam, solo, rock-out, etc.) is very awkward at first and takes time and practice. The first step is to memorize your scales and start combining, and sequencing them. Mess around with the notes, change the order, stay in one area of the scale, add embellishments (hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends, and vibrato). I recommend using a minus track or drum groove to help you feel the vibe and hear how your notes sound over music. And, if possible record yourself and listen to it later.
Improvisation is very subjective, you won’t like everything you play all the time. Visit my YouTube page for more examples and information (http://www.youtube.com/user/ericbuddhahendrix).
